Avoiding the semi-colon can land you a job

Step away from the ; or semi-colon. Very few people use the ; properly. Most people use the ; to make their sentences longer and more complicated. The ; makes readers stumble and ask, "How much longer?" Leave the ; for legal contract writers.

In a writing job interview I was asked, "What do you think about the semi-colon?" I answered, "I know the rules and know how to use it. Most people do not. I think it should be avoided." The panel of professional writers and editors gave each other high fives or probably more appropriately just gave each other knowing glances.

I got the job based on my semi-colon answer and because I was "the only one who sent an error-free application to an editing and writing position." I guess the other applicants tried to use the semi-colon.

Facebook Happy Birthday

Be creative and personal with your Facebook birthday wishes. Everybody says "Happy Birthday". Yawn. Why is this the norm?

When it's your birthday, you don't even look at those. You read the ones where people took 30 seconds, read your page, said something meaningful, goofy or made a full sentence.

At the very least, go to Google Translate to copy wishes in dozens of languages.
